UK not to take part in UPC system

Even though the UK has already ratified the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court, the British government announced in February 2020 that it is no longer planning to take part in the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court system. In view of Brexit, this is not a startling, albeit momentous decision. The section of the central division of the Court of First Instance that was intended to have its seat in London will now have to be moved elsewhere.

However, British companies and Patent Attorneys shall still be able to use the Unified Patent Court once it opens its doors. For that to happen, the Agreement first needs to be ratified by the Federal Republic of Germany.
